a jewel in the city: santa catalina monastery, arequipa, peru
I can be a real cheapskate sometimes.
So when my travel buddy and I were in Arequipa, Peru, and she asked if I wanted to check out the Santa Catalina Monastery, I initially took a look at the entrance fee and scoffed. 35 soles (12$) to get in? I had better things to spend the money on - like dinner!
Besides, just walking around a city is always free. And isn't that the most interesting kind of sightseeing?…

Anyone who travels to foreign lands faces the challenge of cross-cultural communication. My latest blog post summarizes my thoughts on this theme, touches on what I learned at TEDxRainier 11 and lists some of the questions I'm still thinking about based on having been there.

No lines to wait in. No public pat downs or bag searches. No crowded rooms. - OUTBOUND LOUNGE
Yesterday Stephanie from Outbound Lounge complimented me on the great job I was doing with Trip Antigua's twitter account. After seeing her tweet I got up and started doing my happy dance which is very similar to Elaine's dance from Seinfeld (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY_DF2Af3LM) and yes my dance is exactly the same *covers face*.
I took the opportunity…

Caliraya Lake on a Starry, Starry Night
I initially attempted to shoot star trails during a recent trip to Caramoan Island, Camarines Sur. Unfortunately, my camera settings were all wrong and I failed miserably and pathetically.
So, when our photography mentor, Edwin Martinez, shared his knowledge and new learnings with star trail photography, my friends from…

50 Years of Restoration
Today the Nelson's Dockyard celebrated its 50th Anniversary Restoration as a tourism site. Nelson's Dockyard is the most visited tourist location in Antigua & Barbuda and it the only continuously working Georgian dockyard in the world.
As you enter the National Park you can feel the presence of history from the old buildings and cobblestone walkways. Nelson's Dockyard was the centre of the Royal Navy for servicing British Warships.…

16th century ‘take-away’ at a fascinating living museum
Last weekend the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton near Chichester in West Sussex, hosted its annual Christmas Market. The museum, in the heart of the South Downs National Park, is a wonderful collection of nearly 50 buildings that have been painstakingly dismantled, re-built and restored, to bring alive southern England’s homes, farms and workplaces from the past 500 years.…

When Richard and I first decided to go travelling we didn’t know quite what to expect. Having never been on anything more adventurous than a two week holiday to Spain, we were inevitably apprehensive about what we would encounter on our trip across the world.
Whilst we imagined exotic beaches, vast landscapes, iconic landmarks and lots of beer; nothing could have quite prepared us for the roller coaster ride that our 11 months on the road would become. Hand on hearts, we can honestly…

One Day at WTM
I’ve had it with the World Travel Market! My back aches, my feet hurt and I just schlepped a shedload of Press kits across the Southern Counties. This is just an exercise in collecting brochures, and I’m not going next year.
Mind you, I’ve been saying that every year since 1997 … and I still keep going back!
What I have noticed over the years is that…

Istanbul, Turkey: Istanbul Eats Old City Food Tour
I try not to set my expectations too high about anything lest my expectations get crushed to bits and pieces. That didn’t really work out well for me when I headed out to Turkey. There were so many people singing the praises of the food, the people, and the sights that it was impossible not to have heightened…

My first 'Loy Krathong' Experience in Thailand
Last night was my first real Loy Krathong experience in Thailand. For those unfamiliar with Loy Krathong, as far as I know, it's a water festival to celebrate the end of the monsoon season in Thailand and to give thanks for the fact we have water (which we have in absolute abundance at the moment!), I'm not sure about other South East Asian countries.
A Krathong is like a flowery, floating birthday cake - as demonstrated by the lovely Pla below :)

Nice to Meet You All! :)
Hi All,
This is actually my first blog post EVER! So, I think it's appropriate I introduce myself and give a little background about myself.
I live and work in Bangkok, Thailand. After a couple of years of working full-time as a teacher and a part-time web designer, I now work full-time for one of my favourite web design customers/friends, Footsteps in Asia.
I've been giving the monumental task, or so it seems…
