This isn't an exaggeration, Tiroler Gröstl is the most memorable dish I have ever had. But "why" I hear you ask.
Tiroler Gröstl is a traditional Austrian dish and can be made from leftovers. It is really simple and easy to make. It typically consists of pork, roughly cut potatoes, onions, a few herbs and topped off with a fried egg.
"The best part is the egg. I started by getting the yolk to run down, deeper into the dish and then just dived in! Mmmmm"
The first time I tried it was back in March, in Innsbruck. My guide for the day from the tourist board took me to a restaurant in the old town. The restaurant is over 500 years old and even though the chef has changed on just four occasions since it opened, the food is still remarkable. The whole ambiance and feel, including the food, was tremendous. It felt very authentic and traditional.
I also tried cooking Gröstl myself and you can too, it is very easy. Here is a good recipe I used from the BBC Good Food website, just don't forget the fried egg - it's the best part!
Have you ever tried Tiroler Gröstl? Would you like to?
